All train times are correct when the programme is assembled, but please check for short notice changes due to engineering works, etc., before setting off. Also, where bus travel times are given, it is advisable to check times during the week before the walk.


Walks Descriptions

The term ‘strenuous’ refers to a fast pace due to mileage and/or the return train time and are for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level; ‘moderate’ indicates some steep paths and a steady pace for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness; ‘energetic’ means as moderate but with probably over 1000’ of ascent; ‘Leisurely’ means gentle climbs and some level ground for reasonably fit people; ‘easy’ means mostly level ground and a gentle pace.



1. A meal is planned after a long walk on 13th December at the Corn Mill Llangollen.

2. There will be a post-Christmas lunch on Saturday 20th January 2018 at the Royal Oak Hotel, Welshpool.

1. DOLYWERN (GLYN CEIRIOG) TO LLANARMON DYFFRYN CEIRIOG via hills south of the Ceiriog Valley (12 miles)

1. CRAVEN ARMS CIRCULAR via Onny Trail, Middle Carwood, Edgeton, Kempton, Aston on Clun and Sibdon Castle (14 miles)

Wednesday recce walks


As the name suggests, these walks are designed to either recce walks that are already scheduled on the current Rail Rambles programm or to explore new walks with a view to including them on a future programme and thus enhance what is currently on offer. Whilst they are not fully recced, they will all be led by experienced Rail Ramble leaders with the proviso that, unlike walks shown above, the leader cannot absolutely guarantee the return time. Walkers take part at their own risk, and must be prepared for difficult conditions, a potentially longer walk than is described and be well equipped. Wed 22nd Nov Llanbadarn Ffynon to Knighton. Transport: Out; 07:27 train from Shrewsbury arriving Newtown 08:03; then T4 bus at 08:25 to Llanbadarn Ffynon. Back; on the 17:37 train from Knighton.15 miles


Wed 13th December Llangollen circular. Depart Shrewsbury 8.21 for Ruabon, then bus to Llangollen. Return 19.03 to connect with the train to Shrewsbury at 19.39. 11 miles.
